attendance 21

Parents/guardians are expected to email mainoffice@ps140q.org to notify the school whenever a student is unable to attend school virtually or in person.

Without explanation of a reason, the absence(s) are considered unexcused.

Absences may be excused (but not eliminated) for reasons listed below:

When a student is unable to attend school due to illness or injury, an email from parent/guardian and/or doctor is required to indicate it as excused.

Parents/guardians are expected to schedule doctors’ appointments outside of regular school hours. Parents and guardians must make an appointment with Ms. Alli about 504 plans.

If parents/guardians fail to seek the necessary accommodation plans, then any continuing absences due to illness or injury, including asthma-related absences, may be considered unexcused.

Family emergency: When a student is unable to attend school due to a death or an emergency, parent/guardian must email mainoffice@ps140q.org to indicate an excused absence.

Extended family vacations or travel: Parents/guardians should plan vacations and trips when school is not in session and must work with the school to develop plans for take home and make-up work.

Absences to attend funerals outside the country will not be excused.

If a student will be out of school for two weeks or more, parents/guardians must email mainoffice@ps140q.orgto make an appointment with the attendance committee to provide appropriate documentation. Current contact information will be reviewed and updated to prepare for any contingency that delays the student’s return to school.

If a student requires support to return to school (transportation, counseling, supplies), parents/guardians must email mainoffice@ps140q.org with their needs to the Attendance Committee.

When a student is unable to attend school due to appointments with the court, social services, or other city agencies, parent/guardian must email mainoffice@ps140q.org notification and documentation to indicate an excused absence.

Up to three full-day absences for school visits related to the middle school application process will be considered excused with appropriate documentation of the activities.

Religious observation: When a student is unable to attend school due to religious observation, a parent/guardian’s email to mainoffice@ps140q.org with the request in writing is required to indicate an excused absence. Please refer to Chancellor’s Regulation A-630.

Immunization exclusion: When a student is unable to attend school due to lack of appropriate immunizations, the absence(s) are considered unexcused. Please refer to Chancellor’s Regulation A-701.

Absences will be tracked and parents/guardians notified of chronic lateness patterns. According to NYC DOE standards, this is 2 or more absences per month.

Early Departure: Leaving school early must be arranged in advance in writing. Please email mainoffice@ps140q.org

A student can be dismissed from school, early, to the parent/guardian or a person who has been identified on the “Blue Card.”
